As a lover of cargo bikes and utilitarian cycling, I’m always excited to discover new-to-me companies producing beautifully practical bicycles and accessories, as was the case when I stumbled upon Tallinn, Estonia-based Hagen Bikes earlier this spring. Though they’ve been around in one form or another for nearly a decade, they’ve flown under my radar up to now, so I’m introducing them today even though nothing is exactly new.

In 2014, founder Kaspar Peek launched the brand that would eventually become Hagen out of Odense, Denmark. It was called KP Cykler at the time, and they manufactured various bikes and products in their early years before moving back to Kaspar’s native Estonia in 2017. Building upon years of tinkering, modeling, and planning, combined with all the inspiration they’d gleaned during their time in Denmark, KP Cykler soon launched their debut cargo bike model, the Nighthawk, which was a runaway success.

Their initial batches of Nighthawks sold out quickly, spreading the brand’s reputation around Europe. Fast-forward to last March, and KP Cykler officially became Hagen Bikes (@hagenbikes). They now produce diverse models to suit a range of hauling needs, which I’ll briefly outline below.

Hagen Cargo Bikes

All of Hagen’s cargo bikes and frames are built from aerospace-grade chromoly steel and are rated to carry a maximum load of 180 kilograms (~400 pounds). They’re available in two stock sizes, 53cm and 57cm, to help ensure a proper fit for riders of varying heights. Everything is produced in-house right in Tallinn, too, which allows for an unusual amount of customization. Buyers can pick their paint color for a small upcharge, and even custom geometry is possible.

Frames and completes come with a five-year warranty and 30-day returns. At present, they’re primarily selling and shipping to EU countries, though shipping outside of Europe is possible. I asked about shipping to the United States, and Hagen told me that sending individual bikes is likely prohibitively expensive for most buyers, though they’re researching the feasibility of shipping a batch of bikes to the US via sea container.

Hagen offers three models of cargo bikes: the Flagship Cargo, which is based around a 68 x 44.5cm (26.7 x 17.5″) cargo bed; the Cargo Mini, which has a smaller 44.5 x 44.5cm (17.5 x 17.5″) bed; and the XL Cargo, which sports an extended 100 x 55cm (39.3 x 21.6″) bed. All three models have the same geometry; horizontal dropouts that can run external, internal, or single-speed drivetrains; a 700c rear wheel and 20″ front wheel; 100x135mm QR spacing; and disc brakes. They’re available as framesets from €1,840 ($2,015) and complete builds from €2,540 ($2,785). In addition, Hagen also offers complete e-cargo bikes in all three sizes plus a step-through model, and those start at €4,840 ($5,305). Beyond framesets and bikes, Hagen has developed a number of accessories, including various cargo boxes, child seats, a windscreen, a canopy, a floor mat, side panels, and more.
